Job Spurgeon was a Dedham Quaker who was thrown into prison in 1679 for
refusing to conform to the Church of England. He spent 15 weeks
laying on a straw pallet in extremely severe winter weather without any
fire in Chelmsford.
C H Spurgeon's predecessor at the Tabernacle was Benjamin Keach whose sufferings for nonconformity are well known.
